Short tube header

As with all header installs check motor mounts and center motor.
To obtain maximum benefit from shorty headers, the following steps should be taken in sequence:

Basic guide with no internal modifications

1. Install a high flow air cleaner.

2. Install one of the following:
    a. MAC high flow catalytic h-pipe: 6-8 rear wheel hp gain over stock
    b. MAC high flow off-road h-pipe: 9-12 rear wheel hp gain over stock
    c. MAC high flow Pro Chamber™: 23+ rear wheel hp gain over stock

3. Install a MAC high flow cat-back system: 12-16 rear wheel hp gain over stock

4. Install MAC Street Underdrive Power Pulleys 8-12hp in minutes (dyno tested)

5. To enhance the total package, high quality roller rockers (direct bolt on) with a 1.6 to 1 ratio need to be installed. The use of high quality roller rockers will help equalize cam performance from cylinder to cylinder. Stock rockers are stamped and their ratios are inconsistent, be sure to use only high quality roller rockers. Caution: with stock rate springs and heads, do not use more than 1.6 to 1 rockers. Stock springs are not designed for more valve action.

Special notes:
Combined exhaust package with no other modifications netted 42+ hp to the rear wheels in 5.0 Mustang magazine dyno test. An adjustable fuel pressure regulator must be used if all of the above performance parts are installed, especially with the use of the MAC Pro Chamber™. Setting for regulator should be 44lbs. with vacuum hose disconnected or, 36-38lbs. with vacuum hose connected, if any more pressure than this is used, change to a larger fuel pump. (stock capacity is only 88lph)

*Optional enhancements: 65mm throttle body, and a 110lph fuel pump can be used when opting for the high flow Pro Chamber™ in step 2. Expect another 10-14 rear wheel hp.

Bump your total static timing no more than 12 degrees with the above modifications.

Do not use low temperature thermostats (160°) for this setup. 195° thermostats keep your engine at good horsepower temperature. This helps keep oil temperature up and reduces condensation from polluting your oil and creates cleaner emissions levels. The above performance improvements are still very streetable, even commuting or Sunday drives!

*Note: this setup will support mild cam and GT40 intake manifold and supercharger with moderate boost.

Mac Cold Air Intake

Part# 3636/3638/3620

1. Disconnect the fittings connected to the mass air sensor and the air temp. sensor on the rubber intake hose. Loosen the clamp holding the intake hose to the throttle body.

2. Using a 5/16" wrench or socket remove the bolt holding the air box to the fender. Next remove the two hoses connected to the rubber air intake hose.

3. Gently pry upward on the complete airbox/intake hose/mass air assembly until it is out of the car.

4. Remove the airbox section from the mass air sensor by removing the four nuts holding it in place. Also remove the intake hose from the mass air.

5. You will notice that there were two grommets in the car that were used to hold the stock air box in place. Put the grommets back in place and take the fittings that were supplied in the kit and push them into those grommets.

6. Take the cold air fender well piece and attach it to the fender by sliding the tube through the hole in the fender well.

7. Use the two screws and fasten the bracket to the two fittings that you pushed into the rubber grommets. Also use stock bolt and grommet to attach top of bracket to fender well making sure grommet’s flat side is toward fender and the groove in grommet is between the bracket.

8. Attach the mass air sensor to the flange on the tube with gasket in middle using the four bolts and nuts supplied in kit. Tighten the bolts using a 3/8. and 7/16" wrench.

9. Slide hoses over throttle body and mass air sensor with clamps. Install air temp sensor on tube into grommet and do not over tighten.

10. Adjust assembly to align and set clearances then tighten the clamps down. Caution: make sure not to overtighten clamp on throttle body. Connect air temp wiring and mass air sensor wiring. To prevent any leaks use a little silicone around air temp sensor when you install it in grommet.

11. GO underneath fender and install filter using a screwdriver. Once the filter is in place check everything for tightness. Start car and check for idle fluctuation and tighten any connections between throttle body and the end of the mass air.

Equal Length vs. Unequal Length

Unequal length headers will not generate as much horsepower, or torque as an equal length system. If any modifications are done to motor such as air cleaner, cat-back, etc. MAC 1 5/8" equal length headers out performed all others in test. The unequal length header is a vast improvement over the stock system and is less expensive, but is less effective than equal length systems.

Cold Air Induction Kits 96-01 Mustang 4.6L

1. Using a wrench or socket remove the bolt holding the top of the air box to the fender.

2. Disconnect wiring from mass air sensor and temp sensor. Disconnect tubes from rubber intake hose and loosen hose clamp at throttle body.

3. Remove the complete unit from the airbox to the throttle body.

4. You will notice two grommets on the airbox that were used to hold the stock air box in place. Put the grommets back in place and take the fittings that were sup plied in the kit and push them into those grommets.

5. Remove the mass air sensor from the air box by removing the four nuts holding it in place.

6. Take the cold air fenderwell piece and attach it to the fender by sliding the tube through the hole in the fenderwell.

7. Use the screws and fasten the fendervvell piece to the two fittings that you pushed into the rubber grommets. Also use stock bolt and grommet to attach top of bracket to fenderwell making sure that grommet’s flat side is toward fender and the groove in grommet is between the bracket.

8. Attach the mass air sensor to the flange on the tube with gasket in middle using the four bolts and nuts supplied in kit. Tighten the bolts using two wrenches.

9. Install tube to throttle body and mass air by sliding both hoses on tube until they clear the mass air and throttle body. Then slide hoses over throttle body and mass air with clamps in place. adjust tube, install hoses on air fittings and tighten down clamps.

10. Go underneath fender and install filter using a screwdriver. Once the filter is in place check everything for tightness and reconnect wiring. Start car and check for idle fluctuation and tighten any connections between throttle body and the end of the mass air.

Cold Air Induction Kits 86-93 Mustang 5.0L with mass-air

1. Remove entire stock air inlet system form vehicle, this is easily done by loosening the hose clamp at the throttle body, the two mass-air mounting bracket bolts from the strut tower/inner fender well area and the two filter box mounting nuts at the top edge of the filter housing.

2. Once the entire assembly is removed from the engine bay, the air box silencer (if not previously removed) will be exposed. This is located inside the fender well directly behind the air filter housing and is attached with three nuts which once removed will allow the silencer to be dropped down to the bottom of the fender and removed from under the vehicle. Also remove the two rubber air box mounts from the fender well by simply turning counter clockwise and unthreading.

3. Remove the mass-air sensor from the main assembly by simply unclamping it from the stock inlet hoses. Once disassembled you can now remove the three bolts attaching the bracket to the bottom side of the mass-air sensor. Both the bracket and bolts may be discarded. 4. To finish installation of part #3393 simply install components in vehicle as shown in figure 1, for part#3693 install components as shown in figure 2.

ASP Overdrive 5.4L Blower Crank Pulley

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal

2. Remove the blower drive belt, using a serpentine belt tool or 1/2 inch breaker bar or ratchet.

3. Locate the heater hose wire shield that goes under the power steering pulley, and remove the 15mm nut that retains the shield on the blower pulley cage.

4. Slip the heater hose wire shield off the stud and remove the 15mm nut that holds the cage to the engine. Remove the same nut of the passengers side, and the 14mm bolt on the drivers side, located 8" inches above the heater hose wire shield-pulley cage stud.

5. Remove the two 14mm bolts that hold the transmission bellhousing inspection plate on, and remove the plate.

6. Install a 14mm hex head socket and 1/2 breaker bar or ratchet into the lower pulley center hole.

7. Rotate the motor clockwise with the breaker bar or ratchet until you can access one of the siz torque conveter nuts. Using a 15mm Box-end wrench place it verticly on torque converter bolt. Re-install a 14mm bolt (3 rotations) on the passenger side transmission inspection plate bolt hole. Rotate the motor clockwise with the breaker bar or ratchet until the 15mm Box-end wrench. When properly installed, it should look like this:

8. With the motor locked in place, break the stock pulley loose. The stock pulley is LEFT hand thread. Rotate the breaker bar or ratchet CLOCKWISE to loosen it. It will require 100+ foot pounds to achieve. Once loose, remove the breaker bar or ratchet, and spin the pulley off the adapter. Once free, you can remove the assembly from the truck.

9. Clean off any debris on the balancer face with a rag. Fit the new ASP pulley onto the balancer. The ASP pulley is a tight fit, so it may not just slip all the way on. Apply some BLUE Loctite to the three supplied allen bolts, and thread them using a 5/16 hex socket. Tighten them down, a little at a time on each bolt, to "seat" the pulley so as to not damaging it. Once the bolts are snug, torque them to 35-40 ft-lbs.

10. Slip the wire shield back on it's original stud. Re-install the two nuts removed off that stud, as well as the nut removed off the passengers side stud, don't forget to re-install the transmission line bracket. Do not reinstall the top bolt on the drivers side.

11. Remove the 15mm Box-end socket from the transmission bellhousing and re-install the inspection plate and bolts. Failure to remove the 15mm Box-end wrench from the transmission bellhousing will result in engine/transmission damage!

12. Re-install the blower drive-belt. New Belt is Required. Reconnect the battery, check that you re-installed all parts, and removed all tools. Now your ready for 2+ psi of boost.
